Maya T. Prabhu talks about how lawmakers are trying to focus on mental health and its correlation with the homeless. They hope to provide more services to the homeless and housing. Prabhu appeals to ethos by using statistics to show the amount of homeless people in Atlanta and how it has gone down. Prabhu says, “There are more than 10,000 homeless people in Georgia according to a federal count done in January. That number is down about 25 percent since 2015 (Paragraph 60).” Prabhu seems to feel strongly about the issue for a brief moment at the beginning of the article then goes back to stating facts and quotes from the senator in charge of the committee. The author has a factual tone throughout the article as well as also remaining neutral until the end of it. The authors purpose is to tell the people of Atlanta that homelessness and mental illness with the homeless is an issue that lawmakers are looking into and there is a way that they are going about it to help these people find some aid and shelter. The author in this case does not argue but the article is about the lawmakers arguing that mental illness and the homeless have a correlation that needs to be looked at or at least acknowledged. Prabhu quotes Senator Renee Unterman saying, “A lot of time this issue is considered a dirty part of society,” she said. “No one wants to think about either living in the streets, living in extended stay, all the kids in schools that don’t have a home to go home (to) at night. … Even if I can’t solve the issue, I can bring the issue to the forefront (Paragraph 10).” Atlanta Journal Constitution Article written by: Maya T.
